Various Engravings by Czeslaw Slania

Czeslaw Slania has made a large number of various engravings for no particular purpose, either for private use, or as practice works.  They all show his prolific talents in a much larger scale than in stamp format.  Thanks to collector friends I am able to show some of them on this site for your pleasure. Enjoy :)  

The Battle at Grunwald 1410.  Engraved after the original painting by the Polish painter Jan Matejko (1838-1893), belonging to the National Gallery in Warsaw, Poland.  See also Slania's horse-engravings after paintings by the Polish painter Piotr Michalowski. 

This painting has been used for stamps at several occasions:  

• Poland 1945 (Scott # 368), 

• Poland 1960 (Scott # 924), issued at the occasion of the 550th anniversary of the battle, and 

• Poland 1978 (Scott # 2282), a souvenir sheet at the occasion of the Philatelic Exhibition Praga '78.  

None of the above mentioned stamps are engraved by Czeslaw Slania.

• The presentation folder for the two stamps of the Polish composer Frederick Chopin, issued 1955 (Scott # 666 and 667).  The stamps are presented on this site's Poland-section, page 3. 

• Slania has done the engraving of the diving woman in 1988 for the Yugoslav Olympic Committee.  There were five other engravers doing other sports-engravings, but it is unknown who they are.  Slania did the engraving after the stamp he engraved for the Swedish Post Office in 1972, Scott # 915..  The similar Swedish stamp is displayed on this site's Sweden-section.   The sports-woman's name is M. Wessmann.
• The engraving of the horse rider is from a unique collectors' folder from the World Championships in Stockholm, May 1990, containing the works of six world famous stamp engravers:  Czeslaw Slania (Sweden), Thomas Hipschen (USA), Zlatko Jakus (Sweden), Sverre Morken (Norway), Martin Mörck (Sweden), and Lars Sjööblom (Sweden).  
  Each of the engravers has done different engravings.  The set was printed by the International Art Centre, Zagreb (Yugoslavia) on graphic paper from Hahnemuhle & Tumba in 350 official copies in black colour and numbered with Arabic numbers, and 35 are numbered in Roman numbers.  A few copies printed by the engravers themselves in different colours exist.  Published by the Swedish Post Office 1990.
