| The above photocard has another portrait of Churchill by Yousuf Karsh. This photo appeared on the cover of Life magazine of March 19, 1956. On the table next to Churchill is the Williamsburg Bell. In 1955 Churchill received the first Williamsburg Award from the Trustees of Colonial Williamsburg. The award's purpose is "to serve as a continual reminder that there are today, as there were yesterday, vigorous, courageous and eloquent leaders, and is presented to a person who has made an outstanding contribution to the historic struggle of men to live free and self-respecting in a just society." The award is now known as the Churchill Bell in honor of its first recipient. |
