The Mellone listing for this cachet is "Martin Pre Bor Crft." After a bit of digging, I discovered that meant "Pre Border Craft." Border Craft cachets began with the 1966 U.S. Savings Bond issue, so this Churchill cachet could be considered a forerunner of that cachet line. The border on this cover is a traditional black band, reminiscent of mourning covers that were common during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The cachet was also used on an earlier "day of death" cover. |
